Since 1994, Whitby has played host to the now world famous Goth Weekend. The festival is held twice yearly in April and October, and sees thousands of visitors descend on this legendary location in the North of England. The origins of the festival lie in the meeting of around forty pen pals that discovered each other through classic music magazine NME. Due to its connections to the Dracula story, it was decided that Whitby would likely serve as the ideal location for a Gothic music festival.
In 1997 the festival was held once a year, but is now held twice annually due to consistently popular demand and high attendance figures. It has evolved into one of the world’s most successful Goth events and attracts people from around the globe. The central event is held at the Whitby Spa Pavilion, known locally as “The Spa” with Whitby Leisure and Brunswick Centre playing host to the ever popular “Goth Market”. Other official fringe events are held in various venues such as The Shambles and RAW nightclub, and you can also attend several unofficial events in an array of venues including The Metropole, The Rifle Club and The Resolution.
Officially referred to as a weekend, like many festivals there are events during the day on Friday and Saturday as well as fringe events held on the Thursday, Sunday and Monday. Included are markets, additional club nights and a charity football match between visiting team Real Gothic and local team Stokoemotiv Whitby. There are also many events that vary from year to year including boat trips, sandcastle building competitions, photoshoots and picnics.
The first festival takes place from April 23rd to April 26th this year with the dates for October as yet unreleased. The line up this year includes entertainment from The Birthday Massacre, The Red Paintings, Sigue Sigue Sputnik, Andi ex Gang, Doctor and the Medics and The Damned. Whitby has a multitude of camp sites and caravan parks available, and if you are interested in a fantastic, fun filled and exciting music festival in an idyllic and popular location, the Whitby Gothic Weekend is sure to offer you the perfect weekend away.
