Packing tips for motorhome holidays

A motorhome could hold the key to a fantastic holiday filled with great sights and amazing memories. For many people, a trip is all about the destination and the time they spend travelling is just something they have to get through. With a motorhome, the journey is part of the experience and gives you the chance to see more of the countries you are visiting. You’ll have the opportunity to stop wherever you want and see anything that grabs your attention. What other holiday could offer this much freedom?

When planning a motorhome trip you need to think carefully about what you need to take with you. There will be limitations on space but you’ll still need to ensure you have all of the essentials. Here is our essential list of what you need to take with you broken down into useful sections. Remember you can always stop places to stock up when you need to.

Legal requirements

When you drive in a foreign country you need to ensure you follow their laws and carry everything you need. This will differ depending on your destination. You can find a useful checklist for different countries on the AA website. Some of the basic things you will require can include a first aid kit, spare bulbs, headlamp beam converters and high visibility jackets. On top of this you’ll need all of your documentation.

Daily servicing

You’ll need a range of items to maintain and use your motorhome on a daily basis. These include hoses, cables, heaters and adaptors. You’ll need water purifiers for your fresh tank so you can keep it clean and hygienic. It is also a good idea to carry waste water fresheners for the grey tank so it doesn’t get too smelly.

Navigation

A Satellite Navigation system or GPS is essential and will help you to get around. You should ensure it is up to date and has the relevant maps of the country you are visiting. Make sure you have all cables so you can recharge it when you need to. It’s also a good idea to bring along some paper maps and guides, just in case.

Outdoor products

Although your motorhome may be equipped with facilities so you can eat inside, you may want to carry outdoor furnishings so you can enjoy being out in the sun. Collapsible tables and chairs are best because they can be stored easily. If you take a BBQ remember to bring all of the other implements too. You’ll also need sun cream and insect repellent.

Kitchen utensils

You’ll need a full complement of pots, pans, cutlery and any small appliances you may need, along with a tin opener and fire lighter. It is always a good idea to opt for plastic rather than glasses or ceramic because they are lighter, more durable and won’t clink around as much.

Bathroom supplies

This includes everything from shampoo and soap to toilet roll and toothbrushes. Microfibre towels are a good idea because they dry quickly.

Bedding and soft furnishings

One of the most important parts of a motorhome trip is ensuring you can sleep comfortably. You’ll need to bring suitable pillows, duvets and all of the sheets and covers you need. A memory foam mattress topper will make your bed feel so much more comfortable.

Clothing

You’ll need to ensure you are prepared for every eventuality. Make sure you have clothes so you can enjoy the sun and backups in case it rains. It is also a good idea to consider how you will do laundry during your trip and ensure you have everything you need for this.

Entertainment

You may want to bring along something to keep yourself and the family entertained, such as games, toys and books, although be careful not to overpack.

Food

You should be able to find shops and supermarkets on your travels, but starting out with a stock of supplies is always a wise idea. Remember to keep an eye on perishables that will spoil quickly.
